QSP and Multi-Causality: Axiom 13 – Objective Influences

Peace Be With You!
Always hoping there is brightness in your world!

You and I live in the same world but in different realities. Our physical world is governed by energies, forces, relationships, and laws, which create and maintain a basic structure within which we each live out our lives. We all experience the rising sun, the cycles of the moon, the pull of gravity, the warmth or chill of the air, the buoyancy of the ocean, interactions with animals, plants, and insects – wanted or not wanted, and the body’s demand for food and sleep. Our physical world – though maintaining a basic structure – is nonetheless complex, malleable, and dynamic – constantly changing. The dynamic quality of our physical world is what enables you and I to have different objective experiences. Depending upon our location in the geographic and cultural structures of our physical world we are exposed to different rhythms of the sun, apparent sizes of the moon, temperatures of the air, currents of the oceans, seas, and lakes, diversity of animals, plants, and insects, availability, quality, and variety of foods, and even conditioned patterns of sleep. The protocols of our particular cultural structures prescribe the guidelines and shared rules regarding the nature of our relationships and interactions with others – family, friends, at work, school, and in virtually all public circumstances.

It should stand as obvious that you and I affect - and we are affected by - the various elements of our physical world. The Quantum Sociological Perspective asks you to look beyond the obvious and witness the deeper connections and profound consequences that result from your and my choices – sometimes even what seems to be a simple choice. Chaos Theory – developed in earnest in the 1960’s by the American mathematician and meteorologist Edward Lorenz - declares that tiny changes in circumstances can have major ramifications later on. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Butterfly Effect’, chaos is not chaotic in the literal sense because patterns do emerge from chaos. A top executive fails to make critical decisions or to take decisive action regarding a problem employee. Chaos theory or the ‘Butterfly Effect’ suggests that this executive failure has the potential to compound itself into a larger problem or pattern that can become characteristic of the organization as a whole – lack of respect for the protocols of the organization and lack of trust and confidence in its organizational leadership. In other words, little things can have BIG consequences – a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil sets into motion (or at least contributes to) the underlying conditions for a hurricane on the other side of the world. Too often parents, siblings, friends, co-workers, employers, politicians, and others fail to realize how their actions contribute to the creation of the very problems they are trying to solve, or undermine the very goals they are trying to achieve.

Axiom 13: Objective Influences

In the range of causal elements (X1 – XN), some elements exert their influence in the objective reality.

Energy is an animating force that makes things move or change. Energy can metamorphose and manifest itself in many different forms but scientists agree that the total energy of creation is conserved – energy is neither created nor destroyed, only changed from one form to another. It is important to remember that human beings do not live and act outside of this fundamental reality. We are energy beings and our thoughts, words, actions, and even our unexpressed attitudes and emotions are all part of this energetic reality. We have a profound effect on each other, wittingly and unwittingly. The notion attributed to Native American philosophy that - we should walk a mile in the other person’s shoes - reflects the recognition of this fundamental principle of energy conservation. It is not enough that you act, your must also give thought to the possible consequences of your actions – and these are always multiple. If you think only about your own thoughts, words, actions, and unexpressed attitudes and emotions you may fail to recognize your role in calling into existence your own nemesis. Ask yourself, how are my actions affecting the reality of the people around me, the people who depend on me? How does my influence on our shared environment feel to them?

Set a glass of water on the table or counter. Drop a small leaf or piece of thread on the surface of the water. Watch it! Notice the small movements that take place even though the glass and water appear to be standing still. Actually, the molecules in the water are colliding with each other and in turn striking the leaf or thread causing it to move in jerky, seemingly unpredictable patterns (Brownian Motion). Now imagine that the glass is your work environment and the molecules of water are your employees or co-workers. You are the leaf or thread! You come to work feeling great and before you know it you feel yourself being moved or jerked about by forces seen and unseen. Your stomach begins to get queasy, your head begins to ache, your ability to function begins to deteriorate, and your productivity goes down like water running down a drain. These are some of the objective consequences of a failure to observe and manage as suggested in Axioms 10 thru 12. If you recognize that you are an energetic being then you must also realize that even your unspoken and unwitting attitudes and behaviors are having an effect on the environment around you – especially the most sensitive elements of your environment, other people. If you imagine yourself to be one of the water molecules and your co-workers – in turn – to be the leaf or thread flowing on the surface then it should become clear that we are all having this ‘butterfly effect’ on each other and on our objective environment as a whole.

We are co-creators of our realities, wittingly and unwittingly. The energies that we put out do not have to produce negative consequences and environments. If you and I are more premeditated in our thoughts, words, actions, and attitudes we are equally capable of creating wholesome and harmonious environments that stimulate, motivate, and emancipate us from the chaos of everyday life.

QSP and Multi-Causality: Axiom 12 - Accessibility

Peace Be With You!
Always hoping there is brightness in your world!

We can change! We can change how we experience the world. The outer environment may resist change, change in ways that we did not anticipate, and take a long time to change. But in your and my inner environment, in our body-mind-spirit we can change in a moment, because of a single ‘life-changing’ experience or a profound insight or sudden revelation. We can also change because we simply choose to do so, sometimes because of the influence of others, sometimes not. Whatever the motivation behind change, it must act upon our body-mind-spirit in order for change – real change, desired change, sustainable change - to occur. Bringing about change in the outer environment is mostly about influence and persuasion because ultimately others have to choose to change in the direction of your desire. Bringing about change in your inner environment – in your body-mind-spirit is dependent upon Passion and Process. A peaceful world certainly facilitates a peaceful you, but a peaceful you is not completely dependent on there being a peaceful world. In fact, a peaceful world emerges from there being a peaceful you. Passion is a strong and barely controllable emotion, it is the thing that arouses enthusiasm about your desire, it is the fuel for your process of change. Change in either environment is likely to precipitate some measure of change in the other, because everything is connected. But change in you, change in your body-mind-spirit is the essential and most accessible causal element at your disposal to bring about change in both the inner and outer environments.

Passion is not enough to bring about change! You also need a reliable process for determining and prioritizing the steps that must be taken. You need to enhance you ability to make the best choices – your best choices. Taken together Axioms 8 – 18 on Multi-Causality provide a framework for an effective change process. In the Handbook On Being Human, the Mysterious Dr. M. makes this statement.

To succeed you must overcome obstacles and challenges.
To overcome obstacles and challenges you must understand their nature.
To understand the nature of what is to be overcome you must observe and study.
To observe and study you must pay attention and focus.
To pay attention and focus you must calm your mind.
To calm your mind you must enter into Peaceful Space.

The Multi-Causality Formula says that no social phenomena can be explained in terms of a single cause – no matter how much individuals, parents, teachers, employers, groups of people, or governments may strive to do so. Whatever it is that you are dealing with – at home, school, or work – it emerges and persists because of a dynamic combination of variables. Likewise, if there is not a single cause for a problem or phenomenon then there is not a single solution – no magic bullet. Whatever it is that you want to call into existence, it too will emerge because you managed the most important causal elements necessary to create the conditions for its emergence.  In order to orchestrate an effective process for change you have to consider all of the variables that will or have given life to the conditions you wish to alter. Well, actually not all of the variables. QSP suggests that that would be impossible in any practical sense because everything – literally, everything is connected to everything else. Life would not be so unfair - though it comes close sometimes – as to present us with problems that could only be solved by doing the impossible. Most of what you and I have to do to live a good life is – though daunting at times- doable. Most of the causal elements that influence the life and death of the thoughts and feelings that inhabit our inner environment – and affect our body-mind-spirit - are manageable since we have the ability to control our own thoughts, perceptions, judgments, and behaviors.

Axiom 12: Accessibility

In the range of causal elements (X1 – XN), some elements are more easily observed and measured than others.

There may be many latent and hidden causal elements associated with suicide but the warning to parents, teachers, friends, and others generally identify symptoms that can be observed by the average person. There are a number of tests that oncologists can use to detect the presence of cancer, but what often drives patients to the oncologists for those tests is an observation made by the patient who was paying attention to their body. The police use simple and sophisticated tests to confirm that a person is driving under the influence of an intoxicant but often, the police are called by a citizen or driver who first observed the person driving in ways that suggested their intoxication. An unexplained growth getting larger, a undefined but persistent pain, a sudden change in behavior, an apparent inability or unwillingness to change, a slow but relentless loss of enthusiasm, an unyielding anxiety and sense of foreboding. Any and all of these – and so many more – may be part of the fabric that defines your present reality. Paying attention – observation – is one of the most important keys! And some things are more accessible to your observation than others.

Change is always rooted in something! So is perpetuity! What comes and what goes is not random. They are the result of a process! That is as true for you and me as it is for the entire universe. Part of your and my process is seeking the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to make those choices – in every situation – that move us closer to that sense of fulfillment that we desire as part of our inner reality.

QSP and Multi-Causality: Axiom 11 - The Relative Value of 'X'

Peace Be With You!

Always hoping there is brightness in your world!
Last month we talked about Axiom 10, Management. Axiom 10 states that, in the range of causal elements (X1 – XN), some elements are more manageable than others. Lets explore that axiom a little further so that you can really understand Axiom 11 and put it to work for yourself. The annual wildfire season in the American Southwest has warranted international media attention for years, more so over the past decade or so. Having seen numerous reports on the news and using our innate cognitive skills we can pretty much figure out the kinds of things a Wildfire Containment Commander would have to take into consideration while fighting the fire. Or, you can imagine that you are that commander.

Let ‘Y’ equal a successful fire containment campaign, and let's define ‘successful’ as:
Minimal loss of forest and wildlife habitat
Minimal loss of human life
Minimal damage or loss of homes and property
Minimal interruption of transportation, power, and commerce

I’m certainly no expert but those four objectives sound pretty good to me. Now let's list the things that the Commander would have to take into consideration in order to utilize his or her resources effectively and achieve ‘Y’. In no particular order,

X1 = the location and geography of the fire area
X2 = the proximity of the fire to access roads
X3 = the proximity of the fire to power lines and other essential infrastructure
X4 = the proximity of the fire to towns, homes, and businesses
X5 = the nature of the fuel source feeding the fire
X6 = the current direction of the fire
X7 = the weather
X8 = the probable direction of the fire based on its fuel source
X9 = the probable direction of the fire based on terrain
X10 = the probable direction of the fire based on the weather
X11 = the danger level to towns, homes, and businesses
X12 = the availability of local resources including fire, emergency services, and police
X13 = the availability of national resources
X14 = the safety of people who may be trapped in the fire area
X15 = the effective communication of updated information and evacuation orders
X16 = the proximity of a water source to fight the fire

OK! You get the idea. An expert might be able to come up with twice as many ‘Xs’ but this will do for our purpose. What the commander is doing is taking into consideration all of the things (causal elements) that can influence the outcome that he or she wants. Axiom 8 tells the commander to look for the originating source of the fire, ‘anything that emerges has a source from which it comes. Axiom 9 tells the commander that the fire will persist as long as it can reach that which is feeding it, fuel. Axiom 10 tells the commander that some of the elements he or she is considering are more manageable than others. So the commander would have to prioritize these elements. Do you have a fire raging at home or on your job, something burning away your energy, your joy, your ability to perform effectively? The process that our hypothetical commander is going through is the same process that you may need to go through otherwise much can be loss. The Multi-Causality Formula is a coherent, helpful, and effective way to plan out the route to your goals and to devise a strategy for dealing with problems. There is no convincing argument against the efficaciousness of writing down your thoughts and ideas.

Axiom 11: The Relative Value of ‘X’

In the range of causal elements (X1 – XN), some elements exert a greater influence on the emergence of the phenomenon than others.

Having outlined the elements that will influence the outcome of ‘Y’, our commander can now begin to sort through what he or she can and cannot control. It is what it is! The fire is where it is at the time of first observation. Roads can be closed but like power lines, towns, homes, and essential infrastructure, they cannot be moved. The weather cannot be controlled and the proximity of a large enough water source may be fixed. The fuel source for the fire (the forest) cannot be moved but the commander plans strategies for managing the fuel source to hopefully guide the direction of the fire away from essential structures. Homes cannot be moved but people can. Fire Fighters need to be actively involved in fighting the fire so other agencies will have to be responsible for enforcing evacuation orders once announced. Communications will need to be of the highest priority. The commander thinks the fire is likely to move in the direction of the main communications tower so they will need to get started on a containment line immediately. By outlining the goal or problem in this way the commander has given his or her body-mind the thing that it craves. The Brain thrives on associative links, the Mind needs to fill-in the blanks, and the Imagination loves stories. The commander’s body-mind immediately begins to create a picture revealing, in greater detail, the complexity and manageability of the situation. You and I are designed to solve problems! The problems we deal with today are more complicated than one thousand or ten thousand years ago but the human capacity for problem solving is locked in our genetic code. There are effective and ineffective ways to navigate daily life. We each choose one way or the other.

You remember the Serenity Prayer don’t you!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

How can you know the difference unless you analyze the situation? Whatever it is that you are dealing with at home or work, a goal or a problem, try utilizing Axioms 8 – 11 to put the situation under a microscope. The Multi-Causality Formula lets you zoom in on a phenomenon in greater and greater detail all the way down to the consideration of Quantum Influences, Axiom 15. It will be a few months before we get there but you can get a step ahead by purchasing a copy of the Handbook On Being Human, vol I. The QSP Axioms are outlined and discussed in the book, and much more!

QSP and Multi-Causality: Axiom 10 – Management

Peace Be With You!

Always hoping there is brightness in your world! In my last Post I shared about our fan and queen palm trees and the decision we needed to make. At least I thought we did. I think the trees were ‘feeling’ me when I was writing the Post because within one to two weeks something interesting happened. I even mentioned how intent I was feeling while writing last month. But I can’t just tell you what happened without giving you some background. My desire is to assist you in understanding QSP (the Quantum Sociological Perspective) and learning how to use that knowledge to your best advantage. The understanding of QSP and the regular practice of Qigong can empower you in all aspects of your life. That certainty is my motivation for writing this Blog, sharing these introductory ideas with you, and inviting you to study Qigong with me.

QSP Challenges Your Thinking and Your Senses

After some four centuries of being socialized into the Newtonian worldview (law-based, reductionist, materialist, atomist, dualist, and deterministic) it is difficult for many of us raised in Western cultures to wrap our minds around the Quantum Sociological Perspective. We are coming full circle but our journey is not yet complete. For millennia our ancient ancestors and indigenous peoples around the world have described a world in which everything is alive and related to everything else. They referred to other living things, plants, animals, and insects as our relatives. The sky, the waters, the clouds, and the earth were beings with their own natures and degrees of sentience. They spoke of and lived in a world in which the unseen was everywhere and was as real as the seen, if not more so. It was a world in which interacting with and through those unseen forces was as important as any other activity in their and our everyday lives.

Over time the worldview of our ancestors was supplanted by the spread of empire-building religions, the 17th and 18th Century ideas of Sir Isaac Newton, Rene’ Descartes, and the Rational-Scientific Worldview. The world became a machine without life or sentience, an inanimate object without spirit, a cornucopia to satisfy the appetites of man, and the bond between humans and their relatives was broken. Worldviews affect human behavior, and how we behave affects the world around us. Indigenous cultures and traditions persist and remain influential worldviews for many. These indigenous ways of being in the world were able to sustain themselves for tens of thousands of years. The scientific worldview is comparably more significant in the world today. And in less than one thousand years it has produced negative consequences that are fast outweighing the benefits it has produced.

During the 20th Century a significant shift in thinking began to occur. The Scientific Worldview began going through drastic and profound change. The physical science ideal of mathematical precision and predictability, as elaborated by Galileo, Newton, and their heirs, underwent an amazing transformation when Big Bang cosmology substituted an expanding, unstable universe for the Newtonian world machine. Today Quantum Physics is taking us even further, deeper into a universe of incredible depth and complexity, beauty and mystery, seen and unseen forces (Take a few minutes to view the Scale of the Universe web site. It is awesome!). The journey of science has now reached the point of confirming what our ancestors and indigenous peoples around the world have understood for millennia. There is more to this world than can be experienced by our five senses. The universe is alive! Everything is connected to everything else!

Multi-Causality

Any social phenomenon that you choose to call ‘Y’ is invariably the result of more than one causal element ‘X’. Y = F(X1, X2, X3, X4, …, XN) where ‘N’ is an infinite number and 'F' implies 'a function of'.

After writing my last Post I had pretty much decided to cut down the queen palm so that the fan palm could survive and mature. A few days later I fertilized the yard including the two palm trees. One to two weeks after my last Post I noticed that both the fan palm and the queen palm that we discussed had become more vibrant and a few new palms had emerged. Certainly I should consider fertilizing the trees as one of the causal elements in explaining their ‘sudden’ growth and vibrancy. Somewhere in my list of causal elements I would also consider the possibility and probability that the trees ‘felt’ my own thoughts and feelings and reacted to them by demonstrating that they could thrive together. QSP says that the universe is alive and that everything has a degree of sentience. Research on plant life supports your and my consideration of the possibility of a reaction on the part of the trees to the energy field generated by my contemplation of cutting one of the trees down.

“It is fact: man can and does communicate with plant life. Plants are living objects, sensitive, rooted in space. They may be blind, deaf, and dumb in the human sense, but there is no doubt in my mind that they are extremely sensitive instruments for measuring man’s emotions. They radiate energy forces that are beneficial to man. One can feel these forces! They feel into one’s own force field, which in turn feeds back energy to the plant. The American Indians were keenly aware of these faculties.” (Marcel Vogel)

The Rational-Scientific Worldview objectified the natural world and made us less sensitive to its many modes of communication and means of energy transmission. We have been conditioned to see differences where little or no difference actually exists.

“The isolated vegetal nerve (in plants) is indistinguishable from animal nerve: So complete, indeed, has that similarity between the responses of plant and animal, of which this is an instance, been found … that the discovery of a given responsive characteristic in one case has proved a sure guide to its observation in the other, and that the explanation of a phenomenon, under the simpler conditions of the plant, has been found fully sufficient for its elucidation under the more complex circumstances of the animal.” “At death, the plant threw off a huge electrical force. Five hundred green peas could develop five hundred volts.” “Plants became intoxicated when given shots of whiskey or gin, swayed like any barroom drunkard, passed out, and eventually revived, with definite signs of a hangover.” (Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose)

Just think about it and the implications! You and I share this interactive relationship with every living creature and thing around us. Wittingly and too often unwittingly we are always influencing the world we inhabit, the whole thing. And we are communicating our deepest and strongest feelings to others whether we intend to or not. The fabric of this reality binds us together on a psycho-emotional level that is not obvious but is nonetheless powerful, dynamic, and profound.

Axiom 10: Management

In the range of causal elements (X1 – XN), some elements are more manageable than others.

Human Resources and Personnel Management, in fact human social interactions in general involve much more than the arrangement of people based on education, training, and skills. Human shared spaces are dense fields of dynamic energies that also have to be understood and managed. In order to determine what causal elements are most manageable you have to open your mind to considering all of the possible elements. Sometimes working with what we call ‘subtle energies’ can be much more effective than simply moving people, reassigning tasks, or reinforcing existing protocols. To accomplish Multi-Causality Management you need to learn a process that will enable you to actually feel the quantum field as part of your substantive reality. That is where your Qigong training will come in. Certainty will enable you to think and act with confidence from the perspective of QSP. A practical plan for managing your work, home, or other environments and relationships is to begin by understanding the source from which phenomena or problems emerge (Axiom 8) and the source that continues to sustain those phenomena or problems (Axiom 9) in spite of your best intentions and past efforts.

QSP and Multi-Causality: Axiom 8 & 9 - Emergence and Persistence

Peace Be With You!
Always hoping there is brightness in your world! The Quantum Sociological Perspective addresses all areas of our social reality. You can apply its concept, principles, and axioms in any area of your social life especially your primary gathering places like home, school, and work. On this Blog I do try to address some of the specific issues that arise in the workplace from the perspective of both employers and employees. We began this topic back in November 2011. If you are a first time reader or have been away for a while you can use the Blog Archive to the right to catch up on Axioms 1 thru 7. Axiom 8 begins our discussion of Multi-Causality from the perspective of QSP.

Multi-Causality states that any social phenomenon is invariably the result of more than one causal element. In other words, every social interaction is an emergent event that results from the convergence of many preceding events. The statement seems obvious but if you are not careful your mind can trick you. Even though you know intuitively that there is a before and an after to your personal experiences, you may often find yourself treating each occasion of its occurrence as if it were unique. As a result you may fail to see patterns forming and thereby limit your opportunities to avoid, evade, or deflect the things that cause you to most stress and distress. Remember that you are always immersed in the Quantum Field of the Cultural Fish Tank and that your life and experiences are inextricably interconnected to the life-choices of every other person. The workplace can be one of the most dynamic and turbulent areas of the cultural fish tank because the complex, constraining, demanding, insecure, competitive, hierarchical, authoritarian, and nepotistic nature of the modern workplace is a breeding ground for emergent phenomena.

Axiom 8: Emergence

Anything that emerges has a source from which it comes.

Things do not just happen! There is a chain of causal elements, influences, and conditions that converge to create the context in which that particular phenomenon can occur. We have several fan palms in our front yard. Several years ago we noticed first one, then two, three, and now four fan palms growing in our back yard from seed. Nice surprise! We did not plant them but they could not have seeded in more ideal locations around the yard, aesthetically pleasing and convenient for us, and obviously nurturing for them. To fully explore the chain of events leading to their emergence we would have to go back to the origin of the trees in my front yard that were planted with the original construction. But lets just start with the palms in our front yard, the only ones in the area. Their seeding is obviously one of the causal elements. But the seeds did not settle in the front yard near their parents but nor did they have the ability to move on their own initiative. Something had to influence them (wind, birds) to explore the backyard options. And of all of the places the seeds could have settled in the backyard they chose to settle in the conditions that best suited their survival needs, and that fortunately also pleased us. I won’t go on about the wonderful tasting cherry tomatoes that are growing under one of our other trees and how they ended up there, after our opportunistic water melon died. The point is that in your and my reality things are always emerging, some of them bringing positive beneficial consequences and some of them bringing negative detrimental concomitants.

The fan palm and tomato seeds are not much different from the employees that fill workplaces around the world. Regardless of what they might settle for because of their unique determination for survival, what they want is to find a workplace that will receive them and nurture them to perfection like the locations in our backyard are doing for the fan palm seeds. Three of our opportunistic palm trees are doing fine and standing about five feet in four to five years. However one of them seems to be stunted in its growth. The location it settled in is very close, maybe too close to a queen palm and it seems to be struggling for survival. Maybe there is some unhealthy competition going on. You have employees who are experiencing the same struggle right there in your company or organization. We’ve considered what seem to be our only three options. Wait and see how the struggle turns out – live or die poor little thing. Try transplanting the baby fan palm – risky and where would we put it. After all, we did not plan on any of them. Our third option is the down the queen palm (it’s not doing too well anyway) and give the baby fan palm a better chance to survive (not too far from one of its siblings). Option three is a bold move but sometimes bold-moves are necessary. The fan palm would provide more shade, color, and beauty to our yard. It deserves a fair chance. The queen palm is just not fulfilling either the shading or beautifying roles. The queen palm has been around for the longest but the opportunity we see in the fan palm has us leaning toward option three. Letting the backbone of your organization (your worker bees) hang out to dry may be easier but not necessarily the best move in the long run. Sometimes older well-rooted trees will provide shade from the intense sun, protection from the strong winds, and hold moisture in the dry soil to nurture the younger trees growing beneath them. That is the way is should and could be in your organization. But sometimes not! When older trees begin to inhibit the sustainability of the environment, nature will often fell the older trees by disease or fire. Where nature fails to act, sometimes in order to enable future growth, some older trees, those that drain the earth of nutrients, provide no reward, and put the entire ecosystem at risk, they may need to be cut down so that new life can emerge. Yet, nothing must be wasted. There is a delicate balance required.  It is Survival and Sustainability 101 in nature's classroom. It applies to all human institutions and organizations as well.

Axiom 9: Persistence

Anything that persists has a source that continues to feed and sustain it.

If we want to give that baby palm a chance we have to make a choice and act. A little extra fertilizer is not going to solve the problem. The problem between the queen and fan palm persists because we have not made a decision and acted. (Gee! This is really pushing me.) The queen palm will never provide us with what we want and the fan palm though struggling does offer us the possibility of getting exactly what we want. It’s like that sometimes in your organization isn’t it, problems persisting because you or the people around you fail to make a decision and act? Meanwhile no one benefits and your organizational garden begins to wither. Everything that emerges has a source from which it comes! Anything that persists has a source that continues to feed and sustain it! Good things and bad things both have to be fed. You choose which thing to feed! We all have to do that. Feeding the good things may not always bring you good in return but for sure, feeding the bad things will certainly shower you with their negative consequences.

Did I tell you that we have a few raised-bed gardens? Three exactly. Wish you could taste our lettuce, cilantro, thyme, oregano, chives, Chinese cabbage and other goodies. YouTube is great! I recently learned when and how to harvest the Chinese cabbage so that it will continue to grow. That is exactly what we want, multiple harvests from each single plant. We harvest the lettuce the same way, for multiple rewards from our efforts. Isn’t that really what you want from your employees? Multiple rewards for your company or organization from the role each person performs in its growth and perpetuity. You can get what you want and so can your employees if you understand the chain of causal elements that give rise to the emergence of the experiences around you, if you choose from among your options, and if you act. Gardening not only provides us with some good food but with some important lessons as well. If we do not understand the nature of the plants, nurture them according to their unique characteristics and needs, and harvest their fruits and leaves in the proper manner they will wither, die, and go to the compost – their potential gifts lost. Are you managing your human resources to produce a beautiful and productive garden? Wow, fourteen hundred words already! Lets continue this discussion in my next Post when we talk about Axiom 10 – Management.

QSP and the Quantum Entity: Axiom 7 - Societal Influences

Peace Be With You!

So how was your February? Stressful? I hope not, but if your answer is yes, you should know that you are not alone. Of course, that may not be of much consolation to you and probably doesn’t mitigate your stress one bit. But it is important to know that you are not the source of all of the anxiety, frustration, and stress that you feel. You also feel other people’s energies. Some of what and how you feel is the result of your interpretation of and reaction to the stimuli that touch your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin. Some of what you feel is the result of the fact that you are inextricably connected to everyone and everything else in creation. As I stated in my last Post, We cannot escape the reality of Quantum Entities. But why would we want to? Our ability to generate Quantum Entities through our interactions with others is the source of those enduring relationships and connections that bring such joy into our lives. Their formation is an essential part of our nature and the nature of our world and universe. That is the good part. The bad part comes from those relationships and experiences that don’t feel so wholesome and send us spirally into chronic stress and all of its concomitant effects. Somewhere between the occurrence of a stimuli to your senses and your response to it, information gets distorted, some gets loss, and some gets overlooked completely. Our senses lie to us all of the time. Every time you look at an object or person and see them as discrete and separate, you have fallen victim to a lie perpetrated by your eyes, brain, mind, and imagination. The space in between you and that object or person is not empty space. Nor is the interaction between you based solely upon the experiences of your five primary senses.

When the Book of All Things was being composed the first chapters considered the four cornerstones of the life process, creativity, connectivity, choice, and consequences. These four cornerstones or threads would provide the fundamental pattern for the existence of all things. First, creativity was bound to connectivity so that changes would not disrupt the essential unity of creation. This is why it is true that anytime we change a thing, we change more than what is intended. Because everything, object or person, thought or action, real or imagined experience is connected to and affects everything else. Yet, essentially, creation remains unchanged.  The four cornerstones and sacrosanct unity of creation remain intact, and the sum total of the energy that animates the Book of All Things remains unchanged. Your body-mind is a reflection of this basic law of the Book of All Things. Every cell in you body is mandated to create and recreate itself. All of your cells do not perform this miracle over the same time frame. As your cells create and recreate, you do not notice the process or subtle differences because creativity was bound to connectivity and your body carries out its task to maintain the essential unity of the body. When our cells violate their Prime Directive, we get cancers or some other aberrations. It is when your body-mind is experiencing chronic stress that your cells are most likely to violate their Prime Directive.

Next, choice was bound to consequences so that every thought or action, whether willful or unintended would produce dynamic effects, some seen and some unseen, like those of a pebble cast into a pond. We see the obvious surface waves but there is much more occurring beneath the surface. Creativity and connectivity were not distributed evenly among all things, yet everything is creative and everything is connected to everything else (to some degree). Even stone can create! It can bring into being sand by rubbing against itself or by dancing with the wind. Choice and consequences were also not distributed evenly among all things. Choice was apportioned according to the degree of sentience. Stones are less sentient than plants, plants less sentient than animals, and so on. You and I were allocated a capacity to choose that far exceeds that of any other thing on terra firma, in the sea or the air.  Our choices have the most profound consequences of all. This brings us to Axiom 7.

Axiom 7

Human Societies exist within a quantum reality and no aspect of their functioning can be separated from the Quantum Field or fully explained without consideration of Quantum Social Forces.

Social Forces are influences on your attitudes and behaviors that emanate from the nature of social interactions and social institutions. In the absence of any cultural backdrop two individuals react to each other based on their basic instincts, drives, emotions, needs, and fears. That natural reaction can become distorted when the two individuals view each other through the cultural lenses of race, religion, political perspective, sex, gender identity, nationality, social class, or any of the other categories that we have generated in the development of our modern cultures, societies, institutions, and organizations. These lenses are social forces that tend to focus your attention on certain information about the object, person, or experience, often to the exclusion of other possibly important details and facts. Remember, somewhere between the occurrence of a stimuli to your senses and your response to it, information gets distorted, some gets loss, and some gets overlooked completely. These social forces are part of the reason information about your reality gets distorted, loss, and overlooked. The negative consequences on your personal and professional relationships from letting these lenses become the filters of your reality can range from damaging, to destructive, to devastating. Social Forces emerge from and influence social interactions. Quantum Social Forces emerge from and influence the energy atmosphere or context in which those social interactions take place. How can you possibly hope to manage them if you do not first recognize their existence? I’m sure you have walked into a room and felt an immediate change in the atmosphere or quantum field around you, as pronounced as a radical change in temperature. QSP helps you put those kinds of experiences into a cogent framework that includes that which is unseen and nonetheless of consequence.

Every individual is born to be creative and connected, and to experience the reality of choice and consequences. Each of us is like a cell in the body of the social groups to which we belong. Any family, community, organization, institution, or society that stifles the creativity of the individual, fails to nurture interconnectedness (belonging) among its members, restricts individual choice beyond what is imperative to the common good, or acts to breach the bond between choice and consequences when those choices threaten the common welfare is bound to generate Quantum Entities that block the achievements that could otherwise be accomplished. The body survives and remains healthy as long as it can, acting as a coherent and integrated system, ward off any aberrant cells and successfully challenge whatever threatens the continued unity of the organism. Human societies are not a collection of discrete units. When two or more individuals interact a Quantum Personality or Quantum Entity is formed. This Quantum Entity comes into being in the Quantum Field because of the aggregation of human consciousness and is not an independent entity. (Axiom 1) The Quantum Field and its four cornerstones are the guardians and facilitators of the sacrosanct unity of creation.

In my next Post we’ll begin discussing QSP and Multi-Causality - Axiom 8: Emergence. Until then, be creative and connected, and be mindful of your choices for none of them are without their consequences; some obvious, immediate, and explosive, and some subtle, slow growing, and invasive. Claim what is yours and be responsible for it. Let others claim what is theirs and accept the consequences of what they choose to create.

QSP and the Quantum Entity: Axiom 4, 5, & 6 - The Right Fit

Peace Be With You!

Sociologists utilize several sociological perspectives as lenses through which they can view the dynamics of our social world. The Functionalist Perspective focuses on the social institutions, norms, values, beliefs, and other cultural elements that serve as the mortar to hold the society or group together. This is primarily a maintenance or status quo perspective. The Conflict Perspective focuses on the tensions that exist between the various elements and members of a society like economic competition, stratification by race, sex, socioeconomic status, and other social demographics. A third primary sociological perspective, the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective focuses on the contributions of the individuals who make up the group, institution, or society. How does an individual interpret their social role? Who or what is their primary audience when they act? Who or what motivates their process of choosing? What is the meaning that they attach to the various elements of their daily life, especially their social interactions? These perspectives are most useful when used in concert, one lens layered upon another until we get something close to a clear image of the phenomena under investigation.

The Quantum Sociological Perspective adds another lens that makes visible and provides an explanation for those social phenomena that the other lenses fail to reveal or even acknowledge. We have the capacity to affect each other by means other than through our direct social interactions. You are doing this whether you intend to or not. The key is that you can choose to do it mindfully and change the quality of your life in the process. We are not separate and separated entities occupying compartmentalized empty space. We are interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent entities that are contiguous at all times within a singular Quantum Reality. In The Handbook On Being Human, vol I, the Mysterious Dr. M. talks to U about the importance of understanding the Quantum Nature of our reality and the formation of Quantum Entities or Quantum Personalities. They are present in every family and group, on every team and in every organization, permeating every institution, nation, and society, and they aggregate forming the quantum atmosphere or climate of our individual and collective worlds. QSP Axioms 1 – 6 describe some of the characteristics of the initial formation of these Quantum Entities.

Axiom 4

Quantum Entities will form in both primary and secondary relationships.

(That is, in close intimate relationships like with family and friends, as well as in goal oriented relationships like with coworkers, fellow students, service providers, and others.)

Axiom 5

Relationships that are enduring, emotionally intense, or that form in extreme circumstances tend to produce stronger and more enduring Quantum Entities
.

(Employers and coworkers should be aware of how their actions affect the people around them. We tend to take everyday interactions for granted and in doing so can become less sensitive to the sometimes subtle energy shifts that take place during a discussion, meeting, or other interaction. Needing to keep your job, loving the kind of work that you do, and yet hating the employment environment that you currently work in can be defined as an extreme circumstance, especially if the situation has persisted for some time and shows no signs of relief in a near future. It is an extreme circumstance because of the affect on both you and your employer. You are caught in a painful conundrum, are likely to experience heightened stress rooted in internal dissonance, are likely to have low enthusiasm in doing your job and therefore under-perform, and then can come all of the negative consequences that can emerge as your Energy Signature becomes less radiant, vibrant, and spirited.)

Axiom 6

Quantum Personalities (Entities) that form among members of a family tend to be strong and enduring
.

(It is obvious that family life and familial relationships generally emerge within a unique and socially prescribed structure. But the family is not the only place that strong and enduring relationships are formed. They emerge in schools, playgrounds, houses of worship, workplaces, and even from those chance encounters in coffee shops. The workplace deserves special consideration. Consider how much of a person’s self is invested in their job. It is more than just a paycheck. Sometimes workers tell themselves “it’s just a paycheck!” But there are negative consequences to being there but not Being There! You can no more separate yourself from the Quantum Personality of your workplace than a fish can separate itself from the environment that supports its existence. Your hopes, dreams, ambitions, self-esteem, and off-the-job social relationships are all connected to, affected, and to some extent reshaped by your job and the Quantum Entities that emerge in relation to it. Q: What is one of the first five questions asked in an initial introduction? Ans.: So, what do you do?)

We cannot escape the reality of Quantum Entities. But why would we want to? Our ability to generate Quantum Entities through our interactions with others is the source of those enduring relationships and connections that bring such joy into our lives. Their formation is an essential part of our nature and the nature of our world and universe. What we can and should do is understand them and thereby learn how better to navigate and manage our social reality. When you put a hat on that is too small your head immediately tells you that it does not fit. If you decided to wear the hat anyway you would soon get a headache, or worst pass-out. Your body would join your head in telling you that this hat does not fit! If you put on a hat that is too big, that flops down on your ears and half covers your eyes your ears and eyes would tell you that the hat does not fit. The eyes would say they cannot see and the ears would say they feel burdened and uncomfortable. And by the way, in either case, other people could look at you and tell that neither hat is a good fit. (Unfortunately, most people are hesitant to tell you what you should already know!) There is a special feeling that comes along with putting on a hat that is a perfect fit. Made for you! Ha! That is an understatement. It is you! Snug as a bug in a rug as we use to say.

When you meet and interact with someone a Quantum Entity begins to take form. When that happens your Ori (inner head) tells you if the Energy Signature of the other person (or group) is a fit with your Ase Ami (Energy Signature). If you are paying attention the signal is as clear as when you try on a hat. Would you trust your head if it tells you the hat is too small, or your eyes and ears when they say the hat is too big? Then I suggest that you should listen to your Ori when it tells you that something or someone is not a good fit for you, or for their current place in your organization. As an employer there is the additional responsibility of making sure that the Quantum Entities formed by the individuals who make up the work teams, sections, or departments of your organization exude positive Quantum Personalities that feed life into your operations and organization rather than draining it of vitality, creativity, enthusiasm, and performance. Do not forget to consider Quantum Personalities when moving employees around, and don’t hesitate to move employees around in order to achieve the formation of a positive Quantum Entity.

One of the best ways I know to open your mind to the experience of the Quantum Reality is through regular Qigong practice. That is one of the reasons that I recommend companies and organizations offer Qigong training to all of their employees, especially management and executive personnel, as a benefit to the employee and the organization. Another reason is because of Qigong’s stress management effects and advantages. In my next Post I’ll share some thoughts on Axiom 7 dealing with Societal Influences.

QSP and The Quantum Entity: Axiom 3 - Strength and Duration

Happy New Year 2012!

I hope it will be a Peaceful, Prosperous, and Wonder-filled New Year for you. Of course in the current financial, political, and social atmosphere peace and prosperity may seem elusive, and you may find yourself wondering more about the negative realities of your everyday life rather than being able to enjoy the complex, diverse, and astonishing beauty of our world. Negative energy has its own gravitational or attracting force and it is easy to get drawn into its powerful effects. Modern cultures generate so many direct and indirect social interactions, and so many choices, because the probability of encountering negative people and negative situations tends to increase with the density and complexity of the cultural environment.

It is probably easy for you to envision a web or matrix of energy fields connecting from electronic device to device, from tower to tower, satellite to satellite, all wrapping the earth in an overlapping and integrated field of energy. But why let you imagination stop there? Electronic devices are not the only things on this planet that radiate some forms of energy. If you are going to complete that picture you have to also consider the bands of amorphous energy that connect plant to plant, insect to insect, insect to plant, birds and fish to their spawning grounds, and all the other relationships including the nebulous quantum connection between you and other people. The Mysterious Dr. M. discusses this in The Handbook On Being Human, vol 1. Many social, business, and familial relationships become dysfunctional or unproductive because the individuals involved tend to view the relationship in terms of its observable patterns and fail to consider the Quantum Entity that is being sustained by those patterns. Remember, the Quantum Entity is the aggregation of human consciousness. What you say and what you do are not the only things that matter!

What you think, feel, sense, and intend at the core of your being are even more important because it is from your inner reality that you project and receive persistent energies channeled through the Quantum Entities you share with other people. You know this! Think about it! You may interact with a person on the job who gets under your skin for an hour or two of your workday, yet their existence in your consciousness, in fact it may seem to you like their very existence in the world, disturbs you well beyond the duration of your direct interactions. Throughout your workday and well into your evening, perhaps even in your dreams (nightmares), there they are! QSP can help you to understand how to deal with and avoid forming Quantum Entities that are charged with persistent negative energies. Axiom 2 states that the strength of the Quantum Personality is dependent upon the nature of the relationship and the interaction between the individuals precipitating the formation of the Quantum Personality. In other words the responsibility is on you to manage the relationships you form with family, friends, co-workers, and others. One misspoken word from a parent can persist in a child’s energy signature well into their adulthood and the negative energy generated by that hurt may remain manifest in the Quantum Entity that binds the child and parents together influencing the nature of their relationship for the rest of their lives. Likewise, the words spoken and tone used by an employer when speaking to an employee can have a profound effect (positive or negative), not only on the relationship between that employer and that particular employee, but it can also pervasively affect the Quantum Entity of the organization or corporation as a whole. Many employers are more focused on controlling inappropriate and unproductive behaviors rather than managing the quantum energies from which those unproductive behaviors emerge.

Axiom 3: Strength and Duration

The Quantum Personality or Quantum Entity can be an aggregation that is:

Short in duration and exerting a strong influence – When I was a teenager and in high school I met a young Chinese schoolmate who introduced me to the martial arts. We didn’t train together or anything like that. The interaction was of much shorter duration. One day he told me about a particular technique practiced in the Chinese martial arts. That was it! Since that interaction some 50 years ago I have studied various martial arts including under a Chinese Kung Fu Master, traveled and studied in China, become the master of my own system of Northern Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, and taught students from around the world for the past 35 years. However, I cannot remember that students name or face. The Quantum Entity formed between that student and me emerged from a social interaction of short during and is connects us by a single memory thread. He probably doesn’t even remember the interaction. The singular persistent energy thread that connects us emanates from me. Nonetheless, that Quantum Entity has had a strong influence in my life and is now a part of my Energy Signature.

Short in duration and exerting a weak influence – You may interact with thousands of people in the course of your life. Many of them will have no place in your memory. The duration of your social interaction was so short and its influence so weak that the Quantum Entity does not access enough of energy to take form. Like a ghostly image that quickly disappears the quantum field experiences a slight fluctuation based upon the interaction but then, nothing happens, because nothing of consequence takes place between you and the other person, persistent energy does not emerge.

Enduring and exerting a strong influence – Here are two simple examples! It is always good to ask how would I feel? In an organization or corporation, or in a family for that matter, these kinds of interactions can have profound consequences, positive or negative. Imagine a family member who feels neglected or an employee who feels unrecognized and unappreciated because you never bother to give a greeting, a complement, a word of encouragement, or even a smile. Now imagine what emerges if you do those things on a regular basis. It is simple! QSP does not ask you to step outside of reality. QSP invites you to take a deeper look at reality. An employer, executive, manager, or team leader who manages the energy relationship between the various parties to their enterprise is making a cost-effective investment in their own success.

Enduring and exerting a weak influence – How can a Quantum Entity be enduring and yet exert a weak influence? It is because the particular Quantum Entity does not compel you to act or inhibit you from action in any particular way. I had the pleasure of raising two beautiful (inwardly and outwardly) Akitas from puppies. They lived for 13 years and 14 years. We formed a positive and enduring Quantum Entity that fed each of us, my family, and everyone else who visited our home or saw us on a walk. That Quantum Entity is enduring and I can still draw energy from what they left behind, yet that Quantum Entity affects only a narrow aspect of my life and an even narrower set of my long-term or short-term choices. You may have had coworkers or employees who you remember as being inconsequential. Yet, there was something about them and the Quantum Entity that formed through your interactions makes you remember them even if in your mind they stand out for not standing out in any other way. There was a special affinity between their Energy Signature and yours.

You live, work, socialize, and love in an energy environment, a quantum reality. You are constantly moving and reconfiguring the energy of this reality through your thoughts, words, and actions. You are continuously creating either headwinds or tailwinds on your life journey based on your social interactions and the Quantum Entities that emerge from them. Success accrues to those who create positive enduring Quantum Entities that exert strong positive influences on their own Energy Signature.
